Zoo Celebrating Birth of Endangered Western Lowland Gorilla

We are pleased to announce that 22-year-old, Western lowland gorilla Kumbuka has given birth to a healthy infant! The 4.8-pound female was born on Friday, September 28th at 1:30 pm.

Kumbuka’s initial maternal behavior toward the baby was perfect and normal. Unfortunately, Kumbuka was cradling and carrying her youngster improperly and the extremely difficult decision was made to remove Kumbuka’s baby for short-term assisted rearing by gorilla care staff.

Jacksonville Zoo Tiger Cubs

Two healthy Sumatran tiger cubs!
On November 20, 2017, the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens welcomed two male, critically endangered, Sumatran tiger cubs. The cubs are a second litter for 6-year-old mother Dorcas (also known as Lucy to many Zoo guests) and 16-year-old Berani. The boys are named Rocky and Jaggar.

What can you see?
For the first time, we have put cameras up in an exhibit! The cubs now have access to a large exhibit with a stream, logs to climb on, bamboo to play in and up close views of the guests. Rocky and Jaggar are with their mother and can get nose-to-nose with their father, Berani.

Did you know there are less than 400 Sumatran tigers in the wild?
Our rare cubs’ birth is part of a combined effort of zoos across the globe to protect tigers by growing their numbers in managed care.

The Sumatran tiger is the smallest, most endangered, and the only tiger whose population is restricted to a single island. Unfortunately, the Sumatran tiger is critically endangered and only three strong populations remain in protected forests on the island of Sumatra in Indonesia.

One of those populations is in Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park where Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens partners with the International Rhino Foundation to protect their habitat. A four-to-six-person team of rangers travels through the forest, mostly by foot, on multi-day patrols removing snares and traps, and arresting poachers that are trying to capture tigers and their prey. These dedicated rangers ensure the forest and the animals we love, like Sumatran tigers, rhinos and elephants are protected – all three of which are the most endangered animals of their kind.

The Smallest Bird you have ever seen

By accident I got hold of two of the smallest eggs I have ever seen.
Should I incubate them?
Would I be able to raise a baby bird that would hatch from it?

The little bird is called a Wren. In my country it is the second smallest bird species there is.

It hatched so fast that I missed it.
The feeding was hard with my big human hands and very time-consuming. It took me about 80 feeding rounds per day to keep him healthy.
But in the end it worked.

More stories soon cool if you subscribe

The incubator I used is a MS incubator
MS incubators (made in Holland)
And in English

For filming I used a canon EOSD7 and an I-phone 5s
