Watch My Routine With A Diabetic Cat

Imagine your cat has just been diagnosed with diabetes. You might be scared or afraid that you can’t handle giving the insulin shots. You might be afraid that finding a relative or neighbor to give the shots will be impossible.

You can relax. Cats with diabetes often live relatively normal lives and usually get used to getting their insulin injections. AND, finding someone to take care of your diabetic cat isn’t impossible, however, we do suggest you meet with the cat sitter first, do a thorough consultation and go through your routine.

At sit-stay-play, we make sure to give appropriate time to talk with you about your kitty and what’s been working and what hasn’t. Your cat sitter will be adequately prepared to give your cat his or her injection, if by chance the cat sitter you meet isn’t available, another pet care provider from sit-stay-play’s team will continue care for your kitty. You won’t have to worry about finding another person to step in at the last-minute, or worse, that your cat will go unattended to.

Please don’t just hire the first person that you find to care for your cat. Giving insulin injections takes a little finesse and sometimes creativity. Plus, your cat needs to be comfortable with the cat sitter.

There are cases where the cat may be too feral or aggressive for a professional cat sitter to handle comfortably and in that case, we recommend that you contact your veterinarian and talk about boarding. However, even though the kitty in the video is a little grumpy at times, we’re able to give his insulin injections relatively stress free.

My routine with this diabetic kitty works for him and most of the kitties I work with. If you have an insulin-dependent cat (or dog), we can help.

P.S. Tips for diabetic pet parents: Always use a new need/syringe when giving insulin to your pet. Reusing needles can be painful and can cause infection. And, never shake your insulin bottle. Doing so could ruin it. Just roll in gradually in your hand so the fluid becomes mixed – don’t shake!

Not only that, but you’ll be able to meet the sitter that will take care of your pet AND get the scoop on what happens if that sitter has an emergency and can’t make the visit.

P.S. Thinking about taking your cat to the veterinarian or cattery for boarding? If so, please, please, please think about doing these things before you make your decision:

1. Ask to see the facility behind the initial set of doors!
2. Ask to see WHERE your cat will spend most of his time.
3. Ask to see HOW MANY OTHER CATS your kitty will have to share the cattery or cage with.
4.Ask if staff actually spend ANY TIME with your cat? Do they play with them at all? Will the area be lit up or dark? Will there be air conditioning or fans to keep him cool?

These questions might seem over the top but trust me, they aren’t.

These are legitimate questions you really should know the answers to. As a professional pet care provider I urge you to do your homework on the place before you just drop your cat off.

I’m showing you how to inject your diabetic cat using the Lantus pen. Check out my other video where I’m showing how to measure cat’s blood sugar. Do not shoot insulin if you do not know how to measure your cat’s blood sugar. Scruff is the easiest place to start with.
