Similar to the grey-shanked douc, it has a golden face, white chin and dark grey to black hands and feet. Due to hunting, disease, habitat loss, and unregulated mass tourism, the red-shanked douc could face extinction in the near future. Skagerrak: The hunting grounds of the Orcas

The strait that connects the North Sea with the Baltic, with depths of over 700 meters, is notorious for its dangerously strong currents. But currents also mean food and therefore nourishment for the large swarms of fish that inhabit the region. The sea grass meadows are comparable with those off the Californian coast.
Harbour seals, grey seals and orcas hunt here, as do the rare black mouth cat shark and porpoises. Close by, catfish mate, which in itself is quite spectacular and never caught on film in this way before. Lion’s mane jellyfish with nettle threads of up to 30 meters in length make their way through the open sea.
Skagerrak’s coastal regions are amongst the most beautiful and varied in Europe and boast one of the world’s great bird paradises. Oystercatchers, sandwich and arctic terns are more plentiful here than anywhere else in Europe. The infinitely long dune landscape of the Skagerrak, is Denmark’s answer to the skerries of the Swedish and Norwegian coasts.
Large seal colonies can be found in the isolation of the small, picturesque islands and one can come face to face with the animals. In this rough, yet infinitely beautiful landscape, the many streams and rivers that open out into the Skagerrak, are quite remarkable. We accompany salmon in an equally beautiful river landscape and meet with ospreys and sea eagles and eventually come face to face with a brown bear mother and her little ones.

🇺🇸 Walls of Shame: The US-Mexican Border l Featured Documentaries

A border of more than 3,000 kilometres separates the US from Mexico – but it is defined not only by physical barriers made of concrete and steel but by an immigration policy which is failing to address the issues behind illegal migration. Despite the US spending billions of dollars on border enforcement, the lure of work sees illegal migrants enter the country at a rate of 850,000 a year. A series of walls along the Mexican border were designed to stem this flow but based on current estimates it has failed. Instead, the walls have re-routed human traffic into remote desert areas where people risk their lives in deadly conditions attempting to enter the US. This film shows what US immigration policy looks like on the ground for the people making the perilous journey for a better life, and for the Americans who call this borderland home. Update: Since this film first aired on Al Jazeera English in 2007, the US continued to increase spending on border security. At no other time in history has there been as many border patrol officers on duty as there are today. And now the authorities are bracing for a new challenge: children. Since 2014, the number of families and unaccompanied children apprehended at the border keeps skyrocketing. Young people are filling family detention centres near the border, having fled poverty or extreme violence in Central America. And today the issue is taking centre stage in this US presidential election, with Donald Trump calling for more walls, leading some migrants to say they will cross the border now before it may be too late.

The No Man’s Land Beneath the Border Wall

Log Cabin TIMELAPSE Built By ONE MAN In The Forest

No talking viral timelapse video of Shawn James off grid log cabin build by one man alone in the wilderness of Canada, from 1st tree I cut to last floor board I laid.
Please SUBSCRIBE: http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCIMXKin1fXXCeq2UJePJEog?sub_confirmation=1
So Why Should You Subscribe To My Channel?

To watch me build my next cabin – bigger and better than this one!..
To relax…
To virtually immerse yourself in nature…
To see how I live debt free, stress free and low cost…
To see how I build things alone…
To see how I cook with no electricity or gas…
To hear what steps I took to retire in my mid-forties so I could live my dream life…
To interact with the happiest and most helpful community of viewers on YouTube…
To become more self-reliant.

If you want to build a rustic log cabin or tiny off grid home alone in the wilderness and you haven’t seen the rest of my videos, this is a good primer. It’s super fast motion though, so if you are interested in building a primitive log cabin like this, take a look at the “Log Cabin The Bear Den” playlist on the channel.
At the beginning of the video, I show a winter drone photo of the cabin in the snow in December. Then I flashback to the first balsam fir tree I cut down with a saw and axe near the cabin. I drag the trees into place and clear the cabin site. All summer, I cut the notches in the logs as I built the cabin up, offsite. Once I was finished notching the logs with a log scribe, saw, axe, adze and wood carving gouge, I loaded up the entire cabin of logs and moved them to my land near Algonquin Park, Ontario Canada.
Once on site, I spent a month reassembling the cabin on a foundation of sand and gravel. Once the log walls were up, I again used hand tools to shape every log, board and timber to erect the gable ends, the wood roof, the porch, the outhouse and a seemingly endless number of woodworking projects.
For the roof, I used an ancient primitive technology to waterproof and preserve the wood – shou sugi ban, a fire hardening wood preservation technique unique to Japan and other areas in northern climates.
Because the cabin is offgrid, I have used handtools for most of the build and without power, I have no options on site regardless. The tiny house will continue to be operated with power, not even renewable energy for now, so I’m heating the cabin with a woodstove fire place, which I also cook on.
The cabin is made of cedar fence posts, twelve feet long and the cabin measures 10 feet x 20 feet inside with a one hundred square foot sleeping loft on the second floor.
The floor is made of two inch thick pine planks, torched to help repel water and to give them a rustic barn board appearance.

Tune off sound if you don’t want to hear the music, – there is no talking in this silent video. If you are a subscriber or long time viewer, there is some new footage at the end of the video, but otherwise you have seen most of this. As always, I’ll release a new video on Friday showing the progress I made this week on the door and the ice box for food storage.

How Cockroaches Use Karate Kicks to Avoid Becoming Zombies | National Geographic

To escape the “zombifying” sting of emerald jewel wasps, cockroaches deliver swift kicks aimed at the wasps’ heads.

It’s a life-saving tactic to avoid what would be a gruesome fate for the cockroach. The emerald jewel wasp is a parasitic insect with a venomous sting, which it uses to put a cockroach into a passive, zombie-like state. After stinging the cockroach once to paralyze its front legs, it strikes a second time, injecting neurotoxins into the roach’s brain. With free will lost, the cockroach can be led by its antennae to the wasp’s burrow, where it will lay an egg on the cockroach. Eventually, the cockroach will be eaten alive by the wasp’s larva.

However, cockroaches do have the ability to fight back against the wasps. Biologist Kenneth Catania of Vanderbilt University studied the insect encounters and noted six ways that cockroaches defended themselves, including powerful kicks and biting. In the study, sixty-three percent of the cockroaches that launched any of these defenses against wasps avoided being stung.

The Cannibal Generals of Liberia

Full length now on YouTube: http://bit.ly/Liberia-Full-Length

Cannibalism, murder and rape are just a part of everyday life in certain regions of Liberia. Despite the United Nation’s eventual intervention, most of this country’s young people continue to live in abject poverty, surrounded by filth, drug addiction, and teenage prostitution. In 2009, we went to Liberia to rummage through the messy remains of a country ravaged by 14 years of civil war.

UPDATE: Charles G. Taylor, former President of Liberia and warlord, has been convicted by an international tribunal of war crimes and crimes against humanity, including rape, murder, and the use of child soldiers. He is the first head of state to be found guilty by an international court since the Nuremberg trials.

Experience a Traditional Whale Hunt in Northern Alaska | Short Film Showcase

On the sea ice in northern Alaska, the Inupiat wait for the whales. The tradition spans 1,000 years, and a successful catch will feed an entire community for the winter.

About Short Film Showcase:
The Short Film Showcase spotlights exceptional short videos created by filmmakers from around the web and selected by National Geographic editors. We look for work that affirms National Geographic’s belief in the power of science, exploration, and storytelling to change the world. The filmmakers created the content presented, and the opinions expressed are their own, not those of National Geographic Partners.

Know of a great short film that should be part of our Showcase? Email sfs@natgeo.com to submit a video for consideration. See more from National Geographic’s Short Film Showcase at http://documentary.com

During whaling season, crew members spend their days watching the icy Arctic water for the right moment to strike. It will take courage and skill to achieve their mission, and they must avoid desperately hungry polar bears along the way. But in the long moments they stand on the ice, protected from the wind inside a fur-lined parka, a timeless gratitude develops. In those moments, the patient act of waiting transforms into a prayer for the whale. Anaiyyun: Prayer for the Whale, from filmmaker Kiliii Yuyan, tells the story of an Inupiat whaling crew that hunts where the vast plain of ice meets the waters of the Arctic Ocean.

NASAโ€™s InSight Mars landing: what it really took

After a six-month long journey, NASA’s InSight spacecraft successfully landed on Mars. The probe will now begin to collect data on Mars’ crust, mantle, and core, providing a never-before-seen look at the red planet’s inner workings. Getting a new spacecraft on the surface of the red planet is no easy feat – The Verge’s Loren Grush talks to engineers about how they prepared for this landing.

The Grind: Whaling in the Faroe Islands (Full Length)

There’s not much agriculture in the Faroe Islands, an archipelago in the North Atlantic, roughly equidistant from Norway, Iceland, and Scotland. Aside from the sheep that freely roam the fjords and a few root vegetables, the Faroese have always relied on the surrounding sea as a source of fish, seabirds, and the pilot whales they slaughter in a hunt known as the grindadrap, or grind.

“Grind,” which rhymes with wind, is Faroese for pilot whale, and can refer to the event of the whale slaughter, the whale meat, or the whales themselves. Hunting whales for food is a tradition as old as the islands have been inhabited. But in the past few decades, animal activists have taken issue with the grind, despite Faroese insistence that it is sustainable and humane.

Motherboard visited the Faroe Islands to see a grind first hand as the Faroese defend their way of life against pressure from a visiting Sea Shepherd operation. Read more here: http://motherboard.vice.com/read/the-fight-for-whale-hunting-in-the-faroe-islands-inside-the-grind

Why every election gets its own crisis

Trump’s fear mongering about a migrant caravan is a perfect example of how politicians’ exploit last-minute news stories to try to distract voters before a big election.

Subscribe to our channel! http://goo.gl/0bsAjO

October is a tense month in American in politics. The closer a political campaign gets to election day, the more vulnerable it is to an “October Surprise” — a late-breaking scandal or controversy that influences voters in the final days of an election.

“October Surprises” are typically thought of as unexpected events that surprise both sides of an election — natural disasters, terrorist attacks, etc.. But more recently, it’s come to describe an intentional campaign strategy, wherein political operatives exploit late-breaking news stories to try to damage their opponents at the last-minute.

Trump’s fixation on the migrant caravan traveling to the United States is a clear example of that strategy — an attempt to shift the media’s attention away from issues like health care by fear mongering about immigrants.

It’s a cheap political ploy, and many news networks have recognized it as such. The problem is: there’s no great way to fight it.

On Strikethrough, Vox producer Carlos Maza explores the challenges facing the news media in the age of Trump. Follow Carlos on Facebook for more: https://www.facebook.com/CarlosMazaVox

Why Do These Women Stretch Their Necks? | National Geographic

Starting at an early age, women of the Padaung tribe wear a coil of brass rings around their necks. This collar, and the elongated appearance it gives their necks over time, are Padaung symbols they wear proudly. In their native Myanmar, Padaung people often faced persecution over these visible tribal symbols. Now, having relocated to a Thailand refugee camp, these Padaung women continue this centuries-old custom, memorializing the struggles of the past and maintaining a link to their tribe’s history.

10 Famous Funny Commercials

I put together ten of the most funny commercials that made me laugh and that are also famous, that have written history so to say. You find the description below. I hope you enjoy them as I did. Tell me in the comments which one is your #1 – or at least your #1.5 – I will include your vote in the ranking at the end of this text to see which commercial people like the most.

These ads are included:

1. Cinesite Studios, “Beans”, also called “Not for Austronauts” or the “Astronaut Ad” from 2013, a mock ad – the non-existent Haynes Baked Beans only resemble Heinz – for the famous visual effects and feature animation studio known for movies like Harry Potter, Avengers: Infinity War, Captain America: Civil War, and others whose logo appears at the end. This hillarious commercial is often shown but not always understood.

2. Doritos, “Ultrasound”/“Birth” from the 2016 Super Bowl was a highly controversial, yet extremely funny commercial that still has its fans and opponents

3. Kia niro, “Hero” with Melissa McCarthy from the 2017 Super Bowl, also refered to as “I love Whales!” that got a lot of press and features Bonnie Tyler’s “Holding up for a hero”

4. Kia, “The Truth” with Laurence Fishburne as Morpheus from The Matrix, singing Nessun dorma for the Super Bowl 2014

5. Shadow of War, “Not today, Brian” from 2017 for the video game, also known for its line “Nothing will be forgotten”

6. Heinz Tomato Ketchup, “Wiener Stampede”, the adorable ad from the 2016 Super Bowl, part of the “Meet the Ketchups” promotion

7. Volkswagen VW Passat, “The Force”, also called “Darth Vader” from 2011 Super Bowl – this extended version was seen by 8 million viewers online before the game, a huge success at this time, during the game a shorter version was aired, later other versions/sequels followed, a game-changing commercial a lot of media was talking about and many people still enjoy.

8. Clash Of Clans, “Revenge” with Liam Neeson as his famous character from Taken for the Super Bowl 2015, also famous for its line “You will regret the day you crossed AngryNeeson52”

9. Old Spice, “Jungle Wilderness” from the 2011 Danger Zone campaign with the famous line “You smell like you look – amazing” (the most amazing thing, though, is the line “Dramatization only. Do not attempt.” in the bottom right corner at 7:21 – who would attempt THAT?)

10. Wix, “Disruptive World” with Gal Gadot, the new Wonder Woman and Jason Statham from The Expandables and Transporter for the cloud-based web development platform for the Super Bowl 2017 in the extended version – with more than 22.6 million views online it was the most-seen commercial before the game. It was was shot by the French Louis Leterrier who directed the Transporter films, Unleashed, The Incredible Hulk, Clash of the Titans and Now You See Me in Barcelona with estimated costs for producing and broadcasting somewhere around 14 millions dollars

+

11. Anheuser-Busch Budweiser beer / Bud, “Whassup?”, also known as Wazzup, What’s up or True, true that ran from 1999 to 2002 and became a catchphrase. It won the Cannes Grand Prix and the Grand Clio awards, and was parodied in Scary Movie in 2000, years later also by Annoying Orange and others.

11.5 Anheuser-Busch Budweiser beer / “Wassup Wasabi or just “Wasabi”, the lesser known yet extremely funny follow-up to the Whassup commercial with Dookie and his wife

———————————————————–

The votes are in and the current winner is: Bud “Whassup” – true, true …

Results in detail, status July 1, 2018 (votes and positive mentions counted)

1. Anheuser-Busch Budweiser / Bud, “Whassup” / “Wasabi”: 214 votes/mentions
2. Wix, “Disruptive World”: 111 votes/mentions – mainly because of Gal Gadot (and a little bit because of Jason Statham)
3. Cinesite, “Beans” / Astronaut: 107 votes/mentions
4. Heinz Tomato Ketchup, “Wiener Stampede”: 97 vote/mention – mainly because of the cute dogs
5. Volkswagen, “The Force” / Darth Vader: 67 votes/mentions – mainly because of the cute Darth Vader
6. Doritos, “Ultrasound”: 59 votes/mentions
7. Clash Of Clans, “Revenge”: 58 votes/mentions – mainly because of Liam Neeson
8. Kia, “The Truth” / Matrix: 41 votes/mentions – mainly because of Laurence Fishburne
9. Kia, “Hero”: 34 votes/mentions
10. Shadow of War, “Not today, Brian”: 14 votes/mentions
11. Old Spice, “Jungle Wilderness”: 5 votes/mentions

Known as the Siddis, their ancestors originated from the Great Lakes region before being captured and brought to India as Arab slaves. When slavery was outlawed in the 18th and 19th centuries, the Siddis feared persecution and retreated into the forests, where they have been living ever since. Today, the Siddi people are considered to be in the lowest bracket of the Hindu caste system—the Sudras, or the “untouchables.” In this short film by photographer and filmmaker Asha Stuart, get a rare look inside the Siddi tribal villages and explore the cultural diversity of this African-Diaspora community.

In nature, termites build skyscraper-like mounds that are ventilated by a complex system of tunnels. By emulating the ingenuity of termites, Zimbabwean architect Mick Pearce used an approach called biomimicry to design a natural cooling system that harnessed nature. The result is an architectural marvel that achieves 90 percent passive climate control by taking cool air into the building at night and expelling heat throughout the day.

In this first installation of the Decoder series, see how the Eastgate Centre in Harare, Zimbabwe utilizes a termite-inspired climate control system. To learn more, read “Termite Climate Control” from the May 2018 issue of National Geographic magazine.

Mr Bean wants to buy a fancy cupcake, but his wallet is empty, so he has to visit a cash dispenser. As he tries to use it, his card is declined and eventually swallowed by the machine. Bean steals a box of tools from a repairman’s truck to unscrew the front of the machine in order to retrieve his card, thereby triggering the cash dispenser’s alarm and alerting the police.

Bean wants an ice cream from the ice cream van, but ends up serving himself… along with every kid in town.

The Lift
Mr Bean goes on a lift to the top floor of a toy shop, but Teddy gets stuck in the doors and jams the lift. After the firemen pry open the elevator doors and freed Teddy, Mr. Bean bought the last toy car and gave it to the young boy in exchange for his Teddy.

Scaredy Bean
Mr Bean goes to cinema and partly watches two horror films, “Kat” and “The Glob”. However, they scare him too much, so eventually he watches “Mr. Tiny”, during which he falls asleep.
