World of Dinosaurs – National Geographic Documentary HD

Most people think of dinosaurs as big, ferocious and extinct reptiles. That’s largely true, but there are some misconceptions. Dinosaurs came in all shapes and sizes. Dinosaurs were the largest land animals of all time, but a great number of dinosaurs were smaller than a turkey.
Dinosaurs first appeared between 247 and 240 million years ago. They ruled the Earth for about 175 million years until an extinction event 65.5 million years ago wiped out all of them, except for the avian dinosaurs. Scientists don’t agree entirely on what happened, but the extinction likely was a double or triple whammy involving an asteroid impact, choking chemicals from erupting volcanoes, climate change and possibly other factors.

Flying on
Only the big, classic dinosaurs are extinct. Birds are living dinosaurs, most experts believe. Think of that next time a pigeon strafes you.

Fossils show that some of the more advanced dinosaurs had feathers or feather-like body covering, but many of them didn’t fly and probably didn’t even glide. Archaeopteryx, which was for a long time considered to be the first bird (although this status is not certain), could likely launch itself from the ground, but probably couldn’t fly far, according to unpublished research presented at the 2016 Society of Vertebrate Paleontology meeting in Salt Lake City, Utah. Instead, feathers, likely helped these bird-like dinosaurs stay warm as juveniles or send signals to other individuals.
Many people think extinct flying reptiles called pterosaurs were dinosaurs. They were dinosaurs’ closest relatives, but technically not dinosaurs. Pterosaurs had hollow bones, relatively large brains and eyes, and, of course, the flaps of skin extending along their arms, which were attached to the digits on their front hands. The family includes Pterodactyls, with elaborate, bony head crests and lack of teeth. Pterosaurs survived up until the mass die-off 65 million years ago, when they were going the way of the dodo along with marine reptiles and other nonavian dinosaurs.

Hip check
Dinosaur fossils were first recognized in the 19th century. In 1842, paleontologist Richard Owen coined the term dinosaur, derived from the Greek deinos, meaning “terrible” or “fearfully great,” and sauros, meaning “lizard” or reptile.” Scientists classify dinosaurs into two orders — Saurischians and Ornithischians— based on the structure of the bones in their hips. (This saurischian and ornithischian grouping is now disputed. See the “Family tree update” section below to learn more.)

Most of the well-known dinosaurs — including Tyrannosaurus rex, Deinonychus and Velociraptor — fall into the order known as Saurischian dinosaurs (pronounced sor-ISK-ee-en). These “reptile-hipped” dinosaurs have a pelvis that points forward, similar to more primitive animals. They are often long-necked, have large and sharp teeth, long second fingers, and a first finger that points strongly away from the rest of the fingers.

Saurischians are divided into two groups – four legged herbivores called sauropods and two-legged carnivores called theropods (living birds are in the theropod lineage).

Theropods walked on two legs and were carnivorous. “Theropod” means “beast-footed” and they are some of the fearsome and most recognizable dinosaurs — including Allosaurus and T. rex.

Scientists have wondered whether large theropods — such as Giganotosaurus and Spinosaurus — actively hunted their prey, or simply scavenged carcasses. The evidence points to the animals working together as opportunistic hunters: they would bring down prey, but also eat animals that were lying around. When fossil-hunters found bones with bite marks on them, they wondered if theropods engaged in cannibalism. It appears now that the animals may have scavenged their own kind, but they didn’t hunt down their own.

Sauropods were herbivores with long heads, long necks, and long tails. They were among the largest land animals ever, but they likely had small brains. The gentle giants like leaf-eating Apatosaurus, Brachiosaurus and Diplodocus are part of this family.
Ornithischia
Ornithischian (pronounced or-neh-THISK-ee-en) dinosaurs, a group that includes horned and frilled Triceratops, spiked Stegosaurus and armored Ankylosaurus, are more mild-mannered, plant eaters.

These dinosaurs were beaked herbivores. Smaller than the sauropods, the Ornithischia (meaning “bird-hipped”) often lived in herds and were prey to the larger species of dinosaurs. Interestingly, the Ornithischia shifted from a two-legged to a four-legged posture at least three times in their evolutionary history and scientists think they could adopt both postures early in their evolutionary history.

The Story of Electricity – BBC Documentary FullHD 1080p

Electricity is the physical flow of electrons, referred to as an electrical current. Electricity is an energy carrier that efficiently delivers the energy found in primary sources to end users, who in turn convert it into energy services.
Electricity is all around us–powering technology like our cell phones, computers, lights, soldering irons, and air conditioners. It’s tough to escape it in our modern world. Even when you try to escape electricity, it’s still at work throughout nature, from the lightning in a thunderstorm to the synapses inside our body. But what exactly is electricity? This is a very complicated question, and as you dig deeper and ask more questions, there really is not a definitive answer, only abstract representations of how electricity interacts with our surroundings.
Electricity is a natural phenomenon that occurs throughout nature and takes many different forms. In this tutorial we’ll focus on current electricity: the stuff that powers our electronic gadgets. Our goal is to understand how electricity flows from a power source through wires, lighting up LEDs, spinning motors, and powering our communication devices.

Electricity is briefly defined as the flow of electric charge, but there’s so much behind that simple statement. Where do the charges come from? How do we move them? Where do they move to? How does an electric charge cause mechanical motion or make things light up? So many questions! To begin to explain what electricity is we need to zoom way in, beyond the matter and molecules, to the atoms that make up everything we interact with in life.

This tutorial builds on some basic understanding of physics, force, energy, atoms, and fields in particular. We’ll gloss over the basics of each of those physics concepts, but it may help to consult other sources as well.
Electricity can be created in three ways:
The most common is through electro-magnetic conversion, where electricity is generated by moving an electric conductor, such as a wire, inside a magnetic field. The most practical example of this method is a generator connected to a turbine. The turbine provides the motion required to move the conductor in the generator. This energy for motion can come from various technologies, for example wind turbines, hydropower, or the steam created from heat produced in nuclear fission or coal combustion.
Electricity can also be created through a chemical reaction, for example in a battery or fuel cell.
Finally, electricity can be created through solid-state conversion, wherein electricity is generated using the structure and properties of a solid. The specially constructed solid consists of different molecules packed closely together that create an electric current when stimulated. An example of a technology that utilizes solid state conversion is a solar PV cell.

Pluto and its Moons – Space Documentary 2019 [HD]

In 2006, the International Astronomical Union, a global group of astronomy experts, established a definition of a planet that required it to “clear” its orbit, or in other words, be the largest gravitational force in its orbit.

Since Neptune’s gravity influences its neighboring planet Pluto, and Pluto shares its orbit with frozen gases and objects in the Kuiper belt, that meant Pluto was out of planet status. However, in a new study published online Wednesday in the journal Icarus, UCF planetary scientist Philip Metzger, who is with the university’s Florida Space Institute, reported that this standard for classifying planets is not supported in the research literature.

Metzger, who is lead author on the study, reviewed scientific literature from the past 200 years and found only one publication — from 1802 — that used the clearing-orbit requirement to classify planets, and it was based on since-disproven reasoning.

He said moons such as Saturn’s Titan and Jupiter’s Europa have been routinely called planets by planetary scientists since the time of Galileo.

“The IAU definition would say that the fundamental object of planetary science, the planet, is supposed to be a defined on the basis of a concept that nobody uses in their research,” Metzger said. “And it would leave out the second-most complex, interesting planet in our solar system.” “We now have a list of well over 100 recent examples of planetary scientists using the word planet in a way that violates the IAU definition, but they are doing it because it’s functionally useful,” he said. “It’s a sloppy definition,” Metzger said of the IAU’s definition. “They didn’t say what they meant by clearing their orbit. If you take that literally, then there are no planets, because no planet clears its orbit.”

The planetary scientist said that the literature review showed that the real division between planets and other celestial bodies, such as asteroids, occurred in the early 1950s when Gerard Kuiper published a paper that made the distinction based on how they were formed.

However, even this reason is no longer considered a factor that determines if a celestial body is a planet, Metzger said.

Study co-author Kirby Runyon, with Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, Maryland, said the IAU’s definition was erroneous since the literature review showed that clearing orbit is not a standard that is used for distinguishing asteroids from planets, as the IAU claimed when crafting the 2006 definition of planets.

“We showed that this is a false historical claim,” Runyon said. “It is therefore fallacious to apply the same reasoning to Pluto,” he said. Metzger said that the definition of a planet should be based on its intrinsic properties, rather than ones that can change, such as the dynamics of a planet’s orbit. “Dynamics are not constant, they are constantly changing,” Metzger said. “So, they are not the fundamental description of a body, they are just the occupation of a body at a current era.”

Instead, Metzger recommends classifying a planet based on if it is large enough that its gravity allows it to become spherical in shape.

“And that’s not just an arbitrary definition, Metzger said. “It turns out this is an important milestone in the evolution of a planetary body, because apparently when it happens, it initiates active geology in the body.”

Pluto, for instance, has an underground ocean, a multilayer atmosphere, organic compounds, evidence of ancient lakes and multiple moons, he said.

“It’s more dynamic and alive than Mars,” Metzger said. “The only planet that has more complex geology is the Earth.”

5.
Gharial (GUR-ee-uhl)
At around 20 feet long and weighing over a ton, this crocodile appears menacing enough … but it actually poses little threat to humans. Their signature long, thin snouts with over 100 sharp teeth are thought to be an adaptation to their diet, which is primarily fish. That’s a distinct contrast to other crocodiles and alligators … which are known for their expansive, crushing bites. Did you know the Gharial (GUR-ee-uhl) is a critically endangered species … their population in the wild is estimated at less than 240 individuals.

4.
Golden Lancehead Snake
These deadly serpents live on a tiny island off the coast of Brazil’s Sao Paulo state known as
lha de Queimada (ILL-ha Duh Qwhy-da-mah) … or Snake Island. It’s safe to say Indiana Jones would never land here … the place is literally crawling with snakes. It’s estimated that some 4000 Golden Lancehead pit vipers are densely packed into the area, and they’re some of the most venomous serpents in the world. For those who suffer their bite, there is no antidote that completely negates the toxin’s effects, which can include brain hemorrhage. Throughout the island, snakes have been tied up, making it impossible for humans to enter, and citizens are banned from the island. They’re considered critically endangered because they’re only known to exist within a limited geographic range.

3.
Tuatara (too-uh-TAHR-uh)
You could argue that this is one of the oldest creatures on Earth. Although it looks like a lizard, the Tuatara is a single species … and is the only surviving member of an order that goes back some 200 million years! No wonder they’re often called ‘living fossils’. They weigh less than 3 pounds and go just over 30 inches from head to tip of tail. Two extant species of Tuatara are indigenous to New Zealand … their name is taken from the Maori (m-OW-ree) language, and translates to ‘peaks on the back’. Because they can take up to 20 years to reach sexual maturity, their reproduction rates are low … with females mating and laying eggs once every four years. While the creature have been protected by law since 1895, their existence is still threatened by habitat loss and invasive predators like the Polynesian rat. Did you know experts think these critters could live up to around around 200 years in captivity!

2.
A few segments back, we told you about the endangered blue iguanas … and it turns out that an additional threat to them might come from their fellow lizards. The introduction of green iguanas has been viewed as a potential hazard to the blue iguanas’ existence … that’s due in part because they greatly outnumber their blue counterparts, and have a reputation as an invasive species. But they themselves are considered endangered in certain areas of Central and South America … that’s because they’re often hunted as a food source. The picture seems to suggest some of them are on sale at a market of sorts. Did you know they’re often called ‘chicken of the trees’?

1.Yangtze Giant Soft-shell Turtle (Hoan Kiem Turtle)
We actually featured this critter in an episode of Crypto Fun Friday … because it was once thought to be a cryptid known as the Hoan Kiem (hone-keem) Turtle, or the legendary turtle god. The creature figures prominently in Vietnamese folklore, and is said to be the guardian of a magic sword used to defeat invading Chinese armies. The turtle, and the sword were said to be found in Hoan Kiem Lake in Hanoi. Until 1998 the turtle was considered a myth …but that year, researchers were able to capture footage of the creature and obtain some live samples. Science later formally recognized the reptile as the exceedingly rare Yangtze Giant Softshell Turtle, although it’s known by a few other titles as well. It’s also known as the largest freshwater turtle in the world, with reports that certain specimens weighed over 500 pounds! Today, the animal is considered critically endangered, with only three individuals known to exist. .

#14 Coconut Crab

#13 Okapi (oh-KAH-pee)

#9 Two-Headed Sharks
These critters look like they were Photoshopped. But large numbers of these mutant sharks began appearing around 2008 … and scientists are still trying to figure out what is responsible. Some theories include pollution, viral infections and overfishing. When shark populations shrink, so does the gene pool. That can result in a greater occurrence of genetic abnormalities.

#8 Platypus
These unique creatures are native to Australia. And they might be the greatest real-life animal mash-up ever. The Platypus has a duck like bill, a beaver like tail and feet that resemble an otter’s. Add to that, they’re one of the rare species of mammals that lay eggs … And are also one of the world’s few venomous mammals. Males possess a spur on their hind foot that carries venom strong enough to incapacitate humans. Did you know that when the preserved body of a platypus was seen for the time, it was thought to be a hoax!

#7 Halloween Crab
Now here’s crustacean that really beat the odds. It was caught in 2013 off the coast of Maine … and had an incredible two-toned shell. The colors were split evenly down the middle, with one side completely black and the other side entirely orange. Experts say this trick was quite a treat …. Experts say the odds of finding such a creature are around 1 in 50-million!

#6 Roger the Roo
This is a red kangaroo that created some buzz for his ripped physique. Roger was found still in his dead mother’s pouch by the side of a highway. But he grew up … and grew buff. A lot of people couldn’t believe the big red roo was for real. He stood 6 feet tall and weighed nearly 200 pounds … most of it muscle, apparently. The mighty marsupial was so strong he could crush metal buckets in his bare claws. If that’s not enough, his caretaker in Australia says Roger is adept at kickboxing and can disembowel an opponent with a single kick. You don’t want to be on Roger’s bucket list!

#5 Mutant Monkey Pig
THis one definitely fooled a lot of people … it was so hideous, it couldn’t be real. But this bizarre looking creature is a piglet that was born with the facial appearance of a monkey. It was one of a litter of 15 piglets born in China … but was the only mutant of the lot. Due to the severity of the deformity, its owner had to bottle feed the animal. It’s still unknown exactly what caused the mutation.

#4 Dogaroos — WHile it looks as if someone created a mashup of dogs and kangaroos, these dogs were born without front legs. But they’ve managed to adapt well, and they and live with their owner in the Philippines.

#3 The Smiling Squid
Experts say it’s small, but this deep water creature looks like a giant-sized nightmare. It appears to be a squid with human teeth! But it turns out that the unnerving choppers are really just an illusion. What appears to be the critter’s teeth are actually its lips. The lips cover a beak that the squid uses for eating. So far, this is the only such specimen found.

#2 Brazilian Treehopper
This critter looks like it belongs to to another planet. But the Brazilian Treehopper is found only in the northern half of South America. Photos from Stephen Cresswell vividly display the weird pod-like shapes that orbit the insect’s neck. They branch from a stem that sprouts from the creature’s neck. Some sources indicate those orbs could be hollow, but their purpose is still a mystery.

#1 One Eyed Shark
Pictures of this bizarre creature went viral a few years back … and many people were convinced it was fake. But experts verified that the critter is an albino shark pup, found off the coast of California. The animal’s strange appearance is the result of ‘cyclopia’ (sy-KLOE-pee-uh), a rare congenital defect. The condition results in the development of one single eye, instead of two. Experts say that fewer than 50 such cases have been documented.

10 Most Dangerous Waters in the World

From the mysterious Bermuda Triangle where ships go missing or sink to the Blue Hole in Belize a dangerous diving spot for tourists!

Subscribe to Talltanic http://goo.gl/wgfvrr

Rivers of China, China
5. The rivers of China are dangerous, but they kill in a different manner than the other locations that have been featured on this list thus far. They kill through pollution. China has a population that is close to two billion, and this is a huge cause for the extreme amount of pollution in China. However, the pollution is not only restricted to the air, but it also persists in the water. The pollution in the water is composed of almost everything you could imagine: garbage, harmful chemicals, and even radiation. This causes a myriad of health problems for the people of China who live near the river. Almost no one actually goes into it. The people who live in the villages near the rivers of China are 35% more likely to get diseases such as cancer compared to the national average and people die much younger when they live near these infected waters. Conservation efforts to revitalize these rivers is an ongoing thing, but it will take some time before these rivers will ever be back to their former glory.

The World’s Southern Ocean
4. The Southern Ocean of the World or the Antarctic Ocean is one of the harshest environments on our planet above and below the water. The Southern Ocean touches Antarctica on one side and three other oceans on the other. This ocean is not defined on our maps and in reality it is made up from parts of the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans. However, this ocean is unique in its sheer roughness. It has the highest winds and the biggest waves of our entire planet and sailing or even being out here is more dangerous than attempting to dive in the various sinkholes detailed on this list. In addition to the extremely dangerous environment in which this ocean exists, some of the most dangerous animals in the sea exist out here and can be a serious threat to human life in the waters. The most dangerous part of being here is the cold. It is regularly below zero degrees Fahrenheit, and the cold is one of the most prominent ways that this ocean kills people.

The Indian Ocean
3. The Indian Ocean is another part of the world’s waters that kills differently than the other hazards detailed on this list. Unlike the rivers of China though, it is not the pollution that will get you. Rather it is other people who will get you. The waters of the Indian Ocean the most pirate-infested waters in the world. Most of them come from the small kingdom of Somalia where the people are so poor that they have been forced to go to the sea and raid passing ships with assault weapons just to get enough money to eat. These pirates will not hesitate to kill you because when they are hijacking your ship, if you resist (or even if you don’t) you are the only thing standing between them and feeding their families. In the Indian Ocean you have to be actively aware of pirates, if you are not you could end up dead or stranded and neither of those things are very good for your health.

Brine Pool, Gulf of Mexico
2. The Brine Pool is an underwater location that sits at the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico. This newly discovered danger zone is basically death to anything that comes into it whether it be man or animal. The reason for the death caused here is due to the extremely high levels of salt in the water here. The salt density mixed with various other chemicals such as sulfur create a thick soup of death that kills anything to cross into it. The amount of acidic material in the brine pool causes animals and people alike to get effectively burned to death by the solvent-rich water. The crab that you see in the image has basically been pickled and boiled to death, according to scientists, and it was all because he was unlucky enough to fall into what some people are now calling “The Jacuzzi of Death.” This zone is fascinating to scientists, but overall it should be avoided by any reasonable person.

The Bermuda Triangle
1. The Bermuda Triangle is essentially the most dangerous zone in the entire ocean. The catch is that none knows for sure why this is. There have been multiple theories attempting to relate why almost anyone who enters this triangle of water disappears. The driving theory is the presence of gas pockets under the water that rises to the surface and explodes causing ships to sink. If they do not hit a ship, they can rise into the air and potentially knock out the electronics in an aircraft. This is the most accepted theory, but other ideas such as the possibility of aliens or witchcraft have captivated observers of the Bermuda Triangle since its discovery as a dangerous zone.
