They were made by three art students looking to inspire people to generate less waste through their designs. The students – Hong Yi-chen, Guo Yi-hui, and Zheng Yu – collected water from a hundred sites around Taiwan and froze it into blocks. The results are not that tasty, though still insightful. What’s usually a sweet snack was full of plastic and other unsavory pollutants.

While hornbills have a mutualistic hunting relationship with adult mongooses, they have also been known to eat vertebrates the size of these pups. The bold mongoose pups don’t seem to have any fear of this potential predator. Lynda Sharpe, a behavior ecologist, says that mongooses will lie on their backs to invite another mongoose to wrestle. While it may look like it’s playing dead, the mongoose is most likely trying to lure the hornbill to play. Both behaviors are incredibly novel … and also incredibly funny.

Underwater photographer Huai Su filmed a diver collecting an endless amount of plastic bottles that litter the seafloor off Xiaoliuqiu Island, Taiwan. This is just one shocking example of the astonishing amount of plastic that can pollute our environment. An estimated 6.3 billion metric tons of plastic waste has been generated, a new study found, and only 9% of that total is recycled. Most of it—79%—is in a landfill or escaped into the natural environment, and only 12% has been incinerated.

Atlantic puffins live most of their lives at sea, and they only come onto land to breed. 60 percent of the world’s population lives in Iceland, and they have been historically hunted for their feathers and meat. The bird showed no signs of fear, even stopping under the tourist’s leg and tapping at her camera lens. After a few minutes the puffin wandered off, leaving the tourist with an unforgettable experience.

These towers can contain hundreds of thousands of ants, reach 30 ants high, and form with no clear leader. They employ a bell shape, like the Eiffel tower, to ensure each ant bears an equal load. When one section becomes overloaded, it collapses, and the ants scramble to reform. This process continues until a stable structure is achieved. The tower serves as a base of operations and even acts as a shelter from rain. Scientists hope that these mechanics can help improve the capabilities of tiny robots that act as a swarm.

Experts have recreated the face of a Peruvian noblewoman who lived and died around A.D. 400. Using the latest forensic technology, they scanned the mummified remains of the Señora of Cao, who belonged to the pre-Inca Moche culture. The grave of the Señora was discovered in 2005 at a site in El Brujo on the north coast of Peru. Since then, she has become a symbol of Peruvian womanhood and indigenous cultural identity.

Hummingbirds live exclusively in the Americas. The smallest can weigh less than two grams. The largest, the giant hummingbird found in Peru and Chile, tips the scales at around 20 grams. You could send something that weight in the U.S. mail with a single first-class stamp. World’s smallest birds is just one of several distinctions that hummingbird species claim. They’re the only birds that can hover in still air for 30 seconds or more. They’re the only birds with a “reverse gear”—that is, they can truly fly backward. And they’re the record holders for the fastest metabolic rate of any vertebrate on the planet.

Stella Loves Sleeping In Her Cardboard Cat House

Stella loves sleeping in her new cardboard cat house. This was originally broadcast as a YouTube Live Stream on May 9, 2017. In case you missed it, I thought I would share it as a video you can watch at any time. I also thought I would speed it up since it’s not too exciting to watch a cat sleeping for a whole hour. Enjoy…

38 Million Pieces of Plastic Trash Cover This Remote Island | National Geographic

38 million pieces of plastic trash litter the beaches of Henderson Island, a remote, uninhabited island in the South Pacific Ocean. Scientists who surveyed the area believe the island is covered in more plastic trash than anywhere else on the globe, with 671 pieces per square meter.

The island became an unintentional dumping ground due to the South Pacific gyre, a large system of ocean currents that collects debris from the ocean and washes them ashore.

Plastic trash not only litters places such as Henderson Island but it also threatens marine life. Animals such as seabirds and sea turtles ingest or become entangled in the trash, which could lead to injury and death.

Once, This Island Had Just One Tree—Look at It Now | National Geographic

In the middle of the Atlantic, the tallest peak of a small volcanic island is covered in lush greenery, by design. When scientists talk about terraforming a landscape, there’s a good chance they’re talking about Mars. (To terraform a place is to make it earthlike—for instance, bringing in plants and animals.) But the first scientific experiment in terraforming actually took place starting in the 19th century.

Ascension Island was quite barren when Charles Darwin visited, and he had little good to say about the remote, rocky place. But a contemporary of Darwin’s, Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker, saw the island as a blank canvas, ready to serve as home to an ecosystem of his own making. After importing thousands of plants and animals, however, Hooker came to have second thoughts about the undertaking, which wound up threatening the island’s sparse native vegetation. Now, conservationists are working to save Ascension’s few endemic plants from extinction.

Ocean pollution: Remote, uninhabited Henderson Island is covered in our garbage – TomoNews

PITCAIRN ISLANDS, SOUTH PACIFIC OCEAN — One of the most isolated and inaccessible islands on the planet is covered in our garbage — despite being uninhabited.

Henderson Island is a remote atoll located on the western edge of a circular system of ocean currents known as the South Pacific Gyre.

The British Overseas Territory was named a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1988. At the time, UNESCO said its near-pristine ecosystem was of immense value for science.

However, researchers writing in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences say the island has the highest density of plastic waste in the world.

Some 38 million pieces of garbage have washed up on Henderson Island’s once pristine sands. Analysis of the trash shows it was carried there from China, Japan, South America, Europe, the U.S. and Russia.

The researchers estimate that 3,500 pieces of trash wash up on the island daily, and typically include household items made of plastic such as toothbrushes, plastic bags and plastic razors.

Wildlife, including turtles and crabs, have been impacted by the garbage that has been dumped on the island’s shores, according to researchers.

Trying to clean the island’s beaches would be pointless because of the lack of visitors and sheer volume of trash that washes up there daily, report co-author Alex Bond told the Washington Post.

He advised people to use alternatives to plastic, such as bamboo toothbrushes and canvas carrier bags, and to bring your own mug to Starbucks.
