5 Scenthound Dog Breeds You Probably Didn’t Know About

5 Scenthound Dog Breeds You Need To Know About

Scent hounds (or scenthounds) are a type of hound that primarily hunts by scent rather than sight. These breeds are hunting dogs and are generally regarded as having some of the most sensitive noses among canines.
Hounds are hunting dogs that either hunt by following the scent of a game animal (scenthounds) or by following the animal by sight (sighthounds). There are many breeds in the scenthound type, and scenthounds may do other work as well, so exactly which breeds should be called scenthound can be controversial. Kennel clubs assign breeds of dogs to Groups, which are loosely based on breed types. Each kennel club determines which breeds it will place in a given group.

You’ve seen them running alongside the presidential limousine, scanning large crowds like hawks and walking around the grounds of the White House. Of course, we’re talking about the US Secret Service. These men and women have a serious job and they definitely look the part. Dressed in their black suits, their best-known job is to protect the POTUS. But there’s more to it than that. As you’ll see with these following 10 secrets, the Secret Service is about more than looking intimidating while wearing sunglasses.

Ahead we’ll start you off by explaining the original purpose of the Secret Service. Spoiler alert – it didn’t actually involve protecting the President. From investigations to interrogations, we’ll take a look at some of the other jobs the Secret Service performs today. Ever wonder what would happen if most of the US government was wiped out? Well, the Secret Service plays a role in ensuring the continuity of the government and it involves the secret location of Mount Weather. Of course, all those men and women in suits need a place to hang out and we’ve found it on H Street in Washington D.C. We’ll also show you that the Secret Service isn’t all about taking a bullet either. No, they are prepared to perform all sorts of life-saving procedures on the President to ensure their chances of staying alive between the time of an incident and arrival at the nearest hospital. There’s also the fact that not all agents are human. That’s right, dogs do their part in the secret service and their training is just as rigorous as it is for their two-legged masters. Then there’s the proximity of the Secret Service to the President. As you’ll see, they are always nearby and sometimes it can be a little too close for comfort. Even in the safe confines of the White House, agents are on guard and that includes those stationed in the kitchen. They’re not just there to keep the chefs safe. We’ll show you how agents are forensic experts who can track down a threatening letter just by the type of ink it was written with. Finally, there’s the weaponry and equipment. We all know the Secret Service packs some firepower. However, the types of devices and weapons can be truly mind-boggling as it demonstrates they are ready for nearly any scenario.

Mudhol Hound, first Indian breed of dog to be inducted into army | Oneindia News

The Mudhol Hound from Karnataka will be the first desi dog to make it to the Indian Army. The Indian Army which uses German Shepherds, Great Swiss Mountain dog and Labradors is all set to induct the desi Mudhol Hound. The dogs from Karnataka were trained in the Army’s Remount and Veterinary Corps centre in Meerut. Six dogs have already been trained and they will soon be inducted into the Army at Jammu and Kashmir. The induction is likely to take place in December. The Indian Army had expressed its desire to use the Mudhol sight hound for surveillance and border protection duties. It has obtained six Mudhol dogs for testing at the Army’s Remount Veterinary Corps at Meerut. The Mudhol Hound, also known as Caravan Hound is an Indian breed of dog of the sight hound type.

Native dog breed to serve the Indian Army for the first time

The lean and lanky indigenous Mudhol breed of hunting hound is all set to be drafted by the defence forces for guard duty by the end of the year.

This dog variety was initially bred by Ghorpade kings of the erstwhile Kingdom of Mudhol (now in Bagalkot, North Karnataka) back in the 1920s, by crossing Persian and Turkish varieties with local dogs.

While the Army is expected to formally announce the induction of Mudhols in December, trainers at the Remount Veterinary Corps (RVC), a defence forces institute in Meerut have been putting eight Mudhol pups through their paces for two years now. They are happy with the outcome.

Video #4 (a): Breed Focus: The Kombai by Mr. Uma Shankar Pandiyan [Subtitles in English]

Please turn on HD and Captions / Subtitles and read the Disclaimer.

This is the fourth breed-focused video series from Project DesiHounds.

Regardless of the different states in India, there is one breed that is generally highly sought by all. Not for its size, but for the power, the ferocity and the unconditional loyalty that it comes packed with. Enter the Kombai, or the Theni Kombai, also known as the Indian Boar hound.

On my final leg of Project Tamil Nadu of Project DesiHounds, I visited the titular village of Kombai in Theni District. My host was Mr. Pandiyan and his family, who have been raising this breed for many years now – a tradition carried on from his father, now being handed over to his two grandsons.

Mr. Uma Shankar, his son, broke down to me, a layman, the nuances of this famed breed. He helped me see it, for the absolute work dog that it is – and to help understand that despite being a ‘manstopper’ breed of dog, it is capable of unconditional loyalty, and that it possesses great discrimination, when it came to children and other pet animals.

The elder Pandiyan and his son are now embarking on an effort to help resurrect the breed, that has been a cornerstone of both his family and his people. As a family, they are venturing on their own revival effort, with which they hope to reestablish the breed to its former glory. And since the results will take some time to show, they are currently unable to offer pups; both for sale and adoption.

I thank Mr. Pandiyan, Mr. Uma Shankar, their family and their amazing pack for this wonderful interview. I also wish to thank Mr. Karthick Pandiyan, without whom, this interview would not have materialized.

Lean and mean Caravan Hounds

One of the major plus points of the Caravan Hound is that it comes with absolutely no genetic problems- which makes them a very low maintenance breed.
