As previously stated, an animal shelter can be your local pound and be government-owned but not all shelters are funded by tax-payer money. Generally speaking, an animal shelter is a place where animals are surrendered or brought in when their previous owners either cannot take care of them anymore or if they are found on the streets.

An animal rescue is usually a private organization or a private endeavor which takes in certain animals (mostly pet animals or companion animal only) from abusive homes or homeless situations. What an animal rescue does is to provide the animal a temporary home through a network of animal foster parents who agree to host the animal until it is adopted. This is can be for the duration of rehabilitation if the animal has health or behavior problems, or for the duration of treatment if the animal is ill or in need of veterinary help.

An animal rescue can also be focused on one or two types of animals only. Some are breed and age specific which is a good thing because this means that the people who are fostering the animals really have a passion for the specific breed or age of animal the rescue is focused on.

Generally speaking, animal rescues run on pure donation and goodwill of animal lovers. It is very rare for an animal rescue to receive any help or funding from the government.

Adopting can be easy-peasy or can be very painstaking. From what we’ve gathered from interviews and online research, a future animal parent can simply give up because going through the process can be a real test in determination but it will all be worth it in the end; after all, you are adopting another family member.

When shelters or rescues have stringent adoption processes, it is best to take time to get to know them. If they are investing a lot of time and effort in finding the best homes for the animals in their care, that should be taken as a good sign and not as a hindrance to you having your very own fur baby.

Every organization and facility is different. Usually, shelters are not as strict as rescues in processing adoptions but there can always be exceptions. As Jen Daley of Pet Dog Adoptions says, “Whichever organization you choose, it is important to respect the process” – we could not agree more!

An animal rescue group or animal rescue organization is dedicated to pet adoption. These groups take unwanted, abandoned, abused, or stray pets and attempt to find suitable homes for them. Many rescue groups are created by and run by volunteers, who take the animals into their homes and care for them — including training, playing, handling medical issues, and solving behavior problems — until a suitable permanent home can be found.

►Rescue groups exist for most pet types (reptile rescue, rabbit rescue or bird rescue), but are most common for dogs and cats. For animals with many breeds, rescue groups may specialize in specific breeds or groups of breeds. For example, there might be local Labrador Retriever rescue groups, hunting dog rescue groups, large-dog rescue groups, as well as general dog rescue groups.
Animal rescue organizations have also been created to rescue and rehabilitate wild animals in inhumane situations, such as lions, tigers, and cheetahs. Many organizations are dedicated to saving wild animals that are used as sources of income in zoos, circuses, and other cruel circumstances.
Widely recognized as an umbrella organization for animal rescue groups, is an online, searchable database of more than 13,000 shelters and adoption agencies across the United States, Canada and Mexico. The American Kennel Club maintains a list of contacts, primarily within breed clubs, with information on breed rescue groups for purebred dogs in the United States.
Animal shelters often work closely with rescue groups, because shelters that have difficulty placing otherwise healthy and pet-worthy animals would usually rather have the animal placed in a home than euthanized; while shelters might run out of room, rescue groups can often find volunteers with space in their homes for temporary placement. Some organizations (such as Old Dog Haven) work with older animals whose age would likely cause them to be euthanized in county pounds. Each year, approximately 3-4 million cats and dogs are euthanized in shelters due to overcrowding and a shortage of foster homes.

►In the United Kingdom, both shelter and rescue organisations are described using the blanket term rescue, whether they have their own premises, buy in accommodation from commercial kennels, or operate a network of foster homes, where volunteers keep the animals in their homes until adoption.
Kennels that have a council contract to take in stray dogs are usually referred to as dog pounds. Some dog pounds also carry out rescue and rehoming work and are effectively rescue groups that operate a pound service. Some rescue groups work with pounds to move dogs to rescues. By law, a dog handed in as a stray to a UK pound must be held for seven days before it can be rehomed or euthanized.

Operation Dog Days of Summer (Mini-documentary)

Animal Rescue Corps and Mississippi Officials rescue nearly 200 animals from a puppy mill in Senatobia, MS. The animals were found without adequate food, water, or shelter. Some of the animals were emaciated and in critical condition and had to be rushed to a near-by clinic. All the animals were extremely dirty and suffering from heavy parasite infestations. Since their rescue all of the animals have been receiving daily care, grooming, needed medical care and socialization at the ARC Emergency Shelter. Soon the animals will be on the way to ARC’s trusted placement partners, where each will find a forever home. Thank you to the BISSELL Pet Foundation for a generous grant and everyone who helps to make these rescue operations possible.

Rescue of 200 horses by 7 women in 2006 ( Netherland )

The biggest horse story that came out of The Netherlands in 2006 was the amazing tale of the Great Netherlands Horse Rescue. A group of about 100 horses were stranded on a small piece of land when the waters rose unexpectedly after a fierce storm. The horses were stranded for three days on a tiny sliver of land. Firemen and animal welfare officers brought the horses food and water to keep up their strength. As wind and icy rain blasted the horses, they huddled together with their rear ends facing the wind. Finally on the third day, the great rescue was made.
There were 7 woman critical to the rescue ! One woman risked her life cutting fence in neck high water and contacting authorities has never been recognized Norma Miedema. Then there were the 6 women (ages 19-40) who rode that day and were honored by their government for their bravery and courage for riding into frigid flood waters that had hidden ditches, strewn with broken fencing and other hazards.
Norma Miedema the first responder.
The riders’ and horses’ names are :
Susan Fransen riding Blizzard, Micky Nijboer riding Berber, Antje Dijkstra riding Humphrey, Hinke Lap riding Guinever, Christina Stormer riding Perfeft and Fardow de Rueter riding King.
The Riders came on the third day as again the waters were due to rise with the next storm. This next storm would be the horses end. The horses caught by the flooding were weakening and many were showing signs of giving up. The nature of the horse herd kept them from trying to save themselves.
For three days the media broadcasted the unsuccessful attempts to rescue them. Then a posting appeared on the Friesian horse forum, by Micky Nijboer: “horses and riders sought…..Only experienced riders with horses without fear of water” could try the idea of leading them off the small mound of land. They would meet the next day and the video is what they accomplished by risking themselves and their horses.
here’s a link of this amazing story:…

The rescue of Linda, Stella and Falabella was challenging, it took place on a very hot day, and it was in a huge open area with many dangers all around… from cars, to the train and many coyotes in the area. Luckily, I had Loreta Frankonyte with me, and together we were able to accomplish the mission successfully.

Happy Holidays Everybody!

18 Stubborn Homeowners

These are 18 of the most stubborn homeowners in the world!

Subscribe to Talltanic

8. Narita, Japan Farmers

In Narita, Japan, a collection of farmers took umbrage to the fact that their lands happened to coincide with the exact place that the government wanted to construct an airport. Tempers flared and tensions reached an all-time high, resulting in the farmer’s attacking workers, ultimately resulting in several deaths. To this day, an uneasy truce exists around the airport.

7. Guangzhou, China Apartments

Sometimes, though rarely, the indomitable will of those who refuse to sell actually overcomes the wheel of progress. This building in Guangzhou exasperated the construction company with their stubbornness so much that the highway was simply constructed around the building. Though the view is doubtless marred from how it used to be, at least the residents of this building can say they still have their home.

6. Speighalter’s Jewelry Store

Though many of the world’s most famous home holdouts reside in China, occasionally even cheery old England will find a stalwart defender of property. Speighalter’s Jewelry Store in London has refused to sell its prime location for over 100 years and is now surrounded on all sides by the Wickham’s Department Store.

5. A Chinese Farmer

Another day, another major Chinese highway planned to go right through someone’s farmland. Ye Tan and his wife, however, had other plans. They eventually held out and the road was constructed around their home in one of the few examples of a home holdout going well for those who live within. Today the road circles around their meager farm and the couple have a grim satisfaction from their accomplishment.

4. Chongqing, China

Sometimes the owners of homes on prime property are less concerned about their house and more concerned with their wallet, such as this home in Chongqing. The owner, Yang Wu, had no problem selling his home – but he wanted more money! In the end, he only received a modest sum and the house was ultimately demolished.

3. Yichang, China

In a brazen attempt to get a Chinese man to move out of his home, which sits on prime real estate in Yichang, a construction company built up the land around his home, effectively making his house resided in a hole in the ground. The water and electricity was eventually cut off to his home and he temporarily moved away. His resilience, however, proved strong and he moved back in shortly after.

2. The “Nail Grave”

Sometimes, the property in question doesn’t even have a house built on it, like this plot of land in Japan. Instead, the owner of the land has family buried here, and felt that the selling of the land would be a desecration to their memory. This plot was dubbed the “nail grave.”

1. Yonjia Apartment Building

In 2015, an apartment building in Yonjia, China refused to sell out to a company that hoped to build a road right through their home. The resilient property owners were steadfast, however, and the city spent $15 million dollars to construct a four-lane road around their building. Way to stick it to the man!

‘I blame every single elected official’: One Coast Guard family talks about the toll of the shutdown

Amid the partial government shutdown, Ashley Totten worries about the costs of taking care of her 3-month-old son, who suffers from a heart defect. Her petty officer husband is one of about 42,000 active-duty Coast Guardsmen working without pay. Subscribe to The Washington Post on YouTube:
