What does it mean when a species goes extinct?
A species goes extinct when there are no longer any more of that species left on earth. That species is gone forever aka extinct.

What is the 6th mass extinction?
Throughout earth’s history there have been five major mass extinction events– where a large percentage of species died out. Scientists estimate that we are in the middle of the 6th mass extinction event right now, where species are dying out at 1,000 to 10,000 times baseline extinction rates.

Why should we care if a species goes extinct?
Moral and ethical arguments to try to prevent species extinction include reasons like all life has a right to be here, or that we owe it to our grandchildren to protect species so they can see them in the wild. Species also impact the ecosystems they are a part of; plants and animals depend on each other in an ecosystem for things like food and shelter, so if one species dies out, then that could affect other species in an ecosystem. For example sea otters live in kelp forests and eat sea urchins, and when they were hunted almost to extinction the sea urchin population increased and ate all the kelp– destroying the kelp forest habitat.

What are ecosystem services?
Ecosystem services are the collective benefits we get from ecosystems. Ecosystems provide us with a lot of great things like natural resources and water, and are home to living things we depend on– like insects that pollinate our crops and decomposers that get rid of our waste. Ecosystems are healthiest when they are the most biodiverse.

Why Only 9 Countries Have Nuclear Weapons (feat. It’s OK to be Smart!)

What are the rules that govern who has nukes and who doesn’t?

TEACHERS: Get your students in the discussion on KQED Learn, a safe place for middle and high school students to investigate controversial topics and share their voices. https://learn.kqed.org/topics/3

North Korea has been making headlines recently, mostly due to its nuclear weapons. In early January, the country’s leader, Kim Jong-un, boasted of his ability to reach the U.S. with nuclear-armed missiles. Then in March — in an apparent 180 — he told South Korean officials that he would be willing to negotiate with the U.S. to completely denuclearize.

What are the rules that govern who has nukes and who doesn’t? And why do some countries maintain huge nuclear arsenals, while many other countries don’t have any nukes? Joe Hanson of It’s OK to Be Smart joins Myles to investigate.

When were nuclear weapons first developed?

In 1945, on a summer night in the desert of New Mexico, the USA tested the world’s first atomic bomb. It took some of the brightest scientists of the day — and over 22 billion dollars in today’s money — to make it happen.

How do nuclear weapons work?

Nuclear weapons create massive explosions by altering atoms. These nuclear reactions, as they’re called, come in two forms. With fission, 1 atom is split into 2 new atoms. The two bombs the US dropped on Japan in WWII were fission bombs — they killed more than 200,000 people. Fusion, on the other hand, combines 2 atoms into 1. These hydrogen or thermonuclear bombs have the potential to be a THOUSAND TIMES more powerful than fission bombs.

Are there any rules governing which countries can have nuclear weapons and which can’t?

In 1968, the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons was introduced for countries to sign. By doing so, countries with nuclear weapons agreed to take steps to get rid of them. Countries without nukes agreed not to pursue developing or maintaining nukes of their own. Every country has signed the treaty, with a few notable exceptions — India, Pakistan, and Israel. North Korea did sign, but withdrew in 2003. All four of them went on to develop their own nuclear weapons.

What is nuclear deterrence?

Nuclear deterrence is the theory that what makes nuclear weapons so useful is not using them in war. Instead,, nuclear weapons are intended to deter other states from attacking with their nuclear weapons, through the promise of retaliation.

Can You Win an Argument with a Conspiracy Theorist?

Why do some people believe in conspiracy theories? Can you change their minds?

The Earth is flat. We never landed on the moon. Tupac is alive and well, living in Cuba and still releasing music to this day. Conspiracy theories are all over the internet. Why do some people believe in conspiracy theories, and can you change the mind of someone who believes in one?

Conspiracy theories are nothing new, but with the internet and the rise of social media, conspiracy theories are getting in front of a lot of eyeballs. After the Sandy Hook school shooting in late 2012, a term that started on underground blogs went mainstream — CRISIS ACTORS. Conspiracy theorists like Alex Jones started pushing a narrative that the school shooting never happened, and that that the victims weren’t students but instead were paid actors.

Sometimes, conspiracy theories can spill out into the real world and do actual damage — like when a man armed with a rifle entered a Washington DC-area pizzeria, convinced that the restaurant was involved in a sex trafficking operation masterminded by Hillary Clinton. He didn’t find anything but a bunch of now-freaked-out people eating pizza.

But have you ever sat down and tried to argue with someone who believes in a conspiracy theory? Can you change a conspiracy theorist’s mind?

What is a conspiracy theory?
A conspiracy theory is a belief that an organization is working in secret to achieve some sinister goal.

Are conspiracy theories always false?
Not always. They usually are false, but they can be true. For example, back in the 1950’s and 60’s, there was a conspiracy theory claiming that the CIA was using U.S. citizens to conduct secret mind control experiments. Surprisingly, that theory turned out to be true. The project was called MK Ultra, and it was indeed an experiment run by the CIA. Congressional testimony in the late 1970’s showed that it was real and did, in fact, happen.

What is illusory pattern perception?
Illusory pattern perception is when your brain perceives a pattern when one doesn’t actually exist. Humans are primed to see patterns, so this actually happens more often than you probably realize.

Is Your Fleece Jacket Polluting The Oceans?

New research shines the spotlight on a new plastic pollution menace — microfibers.

TEACHERS: Get your students in the discussion on KQED Learn, a safe place for middle and high school students to investigate controversial topics and share their voices. https://learn.kqed.org/topics/

By 2050, the World Economic Forum predicts that the amount of plastic in the oceans will outweigh ALL the fish. When you hear “plastic” pollution, you might picture six-pack rings wrapped around seagulls or beaches littered with plastic bottles. But now, researchers are discovering a new menace — microfibers. They’re tiny strands of synthetic fibers.

Microfibers are a type of plastic pollution known as microplastics. Microplastics are teeny tiny bits of plastic that are smaller than 5 mm — which is about the size of a grain of rice. They typically come from larger pieces of plastic that have been broken down over time, or from plastic microbeads found in exfoliating face washes.

Most microfiber pollution comes from the synthetic clothing that many of us LOVE to wear — think fleece jackets and yoga pants. But this comfort and fashion has a cost. Each time synthetic fabrics are washed, those tiny microfibers shed. Washing a typical polyester fleece can release thousands of microfibers that can travel from the washing machine to the local water treatment plant, where they can slip by filters and enter rivers, lakes, and oceans. And from there, fish and other marine life are eating the microfibers, which may leach harmful toxins.

Microfiber research is pretty new. It didn’t really start until 2011. But since then, researchers have been finding microfibers EVERYWHERE. They’ve been found in tap water in dozens of countries, including the U.S. A German study found microfibers in all 24 beer brands they tested. Researchers in Paris even discovered microfibers falling from the air, meaning we could be BREATHING them in on a daily basis.

What are microplastics?
Small plastic pieces less than five millimeters long which can be harmful to our ocean and aquatic life.

What is plastic made of?
Plastics are made from oil. Oil is a carbon-rich raw material, and plastics are large carbon-containing compounds. They’re large molecules called polymers, which are composed of repeating units of shorter carbon-containing compounds called monomers.

Everything has its time – as the old saying goes. Throughout the Earths history, species have come and species have gone. For the first time though, humans have reached a point where they may be able to bring back some species from the grave. Some people argue this is a bad idea, others can’t wait to see it happen – either way, it seems like its going to become a reality in the not too distant future. My name is Danny Burke, this is the Top 10 Extinct Animals Being Brought Back To Life.

World of Dinosaurs – National Geographic Documentary HD

Most people think of dinosaurs as big, ferocious and extinct reptiles. That’s largely true, but there are some misconceptions. Dinosaurs came in all shapes and sizes. Dinosaurs were the largest land animals of all time, but a great number of dinosaurs were smaller than a turkey.
Dinosaurs first appeared between 247 and 240 million years ago. They ruled the Earth for about 175 million years until an extinction event 65.5 million years ago wiped out all of them, except for the avian dinosaurs. Scientists don’t agree entirely on what happened, but the extinction likely was a double or triple whammy involving an asteroid impact, choking chemicals from erupting volcanoes, climate change and possibly other factors.

Flying on
Only the big, classic dinosaurs are extinct. Birds are living dinosaurs, most experts believe. Think of that next time a pigeon strafes you.

Fossils show that some of the more advanced dinosaurs had feathers or feather-like body covering, but many of them didn’t fly and probably didn’t even glide. Archaeopteryx, which was for a long time considered to be the first bird (although this status is not certain), could likely launch itself from the ground, but probably couldn’t fly far, according to unpublished research presented at the 2016 Society of Vertebrate Paleontology meeting in Salt Lake City, Utah. Instead, feathers, likely helped these bird-like dinosaurs stay warm as juveniles or send signals to other individuals.
Many people think extinct flying reptiles called pterosaurs were dinosaurs. They were dinosaurs’ closest relatives, but technically not dinosaurs. Pterosaurs had hollow bones, relatively large brains and eyes, and, of course, the flaps of skin extending along their arms, which were attached to the digits on their front hands. The family includes Pterodactyls, with elaborate, bony head crests and lack of teeth. Pterosaurs survived up until the mass die-off 65 million years ago, when they were going the way of the dodo along with marine reptiles and other nonavian dinosaurs.

Hip check
Dinosaur fossils were first recognized in the 19th century. In 1842, paleontologist Richard Owen coined the term dinosaur, derived from the Greek deinos, meaning “terrible” or “fearfully great,” and sauros, meaning “lizard” or reptile.” Scientists classify dinosaurs into two orders — Saurischians and Ornithischians— based on the structure of the bones in their hips. (This saurischian and ornithischian grouping is now disputed. See the “Family tree update” section below to learn more.)

Most of the well-known dinosaurs — including Tyrannosaurus rex, Deinonychus and Velociraptor — fall into the order known as Saurischian dinosaurs (pronounced sor-ISK-ee-en). These “reptile-hipped” dinosaurs have a pelvis that points forward, similar to more primitive animals. They are often long-necked, have large and sharp teeth, long second fingers, and a first finger that points strongly away from the rest of the fingers.

Saurischians are divided into two groups – four legged herbivores called sauropods and two-legged carnivores called theropods (living birds are in the theropod lineage).

Theropods walked on two legs and were carnivorous. “Theropod” means “beast-footed” and they are some of the fearsome and most recognizable dinosaurs — including Allosaurus and T. rex.

Scientists have wondered whether large theropods — such as Giganotosaurus and Spinosaurus — actively hunted their prey, or simply scavenged carcasses. The evidence points to the animals working together as opportunistic hunters: they would bring down prey, but also eat animals that were lying around. When fossil-hunters found bones with bite marks on them, they wondered if theropods engaged in cannibalism. It appears now that the animals may have scavenged their own kind, but they didn’t hunt down their own.

Sauropods were herbivores with long heads, long necks, and long tails. They were among the largest land animals ever, but they likely had small brains. The gentle giants like leaf-eating Apatosaurus, Brachiosaurus and Diplodocus are part of this family.
Ornithischia
Ornithischian (pronounced or-neh-THISK-ee-en) dinosaurs, a group that includes horned and frilled Triceratops, spiked Stegosaurus and armored Ankylosaurus, are more mild-mannered, plant eaters.

These dinosaurs were beaked herbivores. Smaller than the sauropods, the Ornithischia (meaning “bird-hipped”) often lived in herds and were prey to the larger species of dinosaurs. Interestingly, the Ornithischia shifted from a two-legged to a four-legged posture at least three times in their evolutionary history and scientists think they could adopt both postures early in their evolutionary history.

The Story of Electricity – BBC Documentary FullHD 1080p

Electricity is the physical flow of electrons, referred to as an electrical current. Electricity is an energy carrier that efficiently delivers the energy found in primary sources to end users, who in turn convert it into energy services.
Electricity is all around us–powering technology like our cell phones, computers, lights, soldering irons, and air conditioners. It’s tough to escape it in our modern world. Even when you try to escape electricity, it’s still at work throughout nature, from the lightning in a thunderstorm to the synapses inside our body. But what exactly is electricity? This is a very complicated question, and as you dig deeper and ask more questions, there really is not a definitive answer, only abstract representations of how electricity interacts with our surroundings.
Electricity is a natural phenomenon that occurs throughout nature and takes many different forms. In this tutorial we’ll focus on current electricity: the stuff that powers our electronic gadgets. Our goal is to understand how electricity flows from a power source through wires, lighting up LEDs, spinning motors, and powering our communication devices.

Electricity is briefly defined as the flow of electric charge, but there’s so much behind that simple statement. Where do the charges come from? How do we move them? Where do they move to? How does an electric charge cause mechanical motion or make things light up? So many questions! To begin to explain what electricity is we need to zoom way in, beyond the matter and molecules, to the atoms that make up everything we interact with in life.

This tutorial builds on some basic understanding of physics, force, energy, atoms, and fields in particular. We’ll gloss over the basics of each of those physics concepts, but it may help to consult other sources as well.
Electricity can be created in three ways:
The most common is through electro-magnetic conversion, where electricity is generated by moving an electric conductor, such as a wire, inside a magnetic field. The most practical example of this method is a generator connected to a turbine. The turbine provides the motion required to move the conductor in the generator. This energy for motion can come from various technologies, for example wind turbines, hydropower, or the steam created from heat produced in nuclear fission or coal combustion.
Electricity can also be created through a chemical reaction, for example in a battery or fuel cell.
Finally, electricity can be created through solid-state conversion, wherein electricity is generated using the structure and properties of a solid. The specially constructed solid consists of different molecules packed closely together that create an electric current when stimulated. An example of a technology that utilizes solid state conversion is a solar PV cell.

Pluto and its Moons – Space Documentary 2019 [HD]

In 2006, the International Astronomical Union, a global group of astronomy experts, established a definition of a planet that required it to “clear” its orbit, or in other words, be the largest gravitational force in its orbit.

Since Neptune’s gravity influences its neighboring planet Pluto, and Pluto shares its orbit with frozen gases and objects in the Kuiper belt, that meant Pluto was out of planet status. However, in a new study published online Wednesday in the journal Icarus, UCF planetary scientist Philip Metzger, who is with the university’s Florida Space Institute, reported that this standard for classifying planets is not supported in the research literature.

Metzger, who is lead author on the study, reviewed scientific literature from the past 200 years and found only one publication — from 1802 — that used the clearing-orbit requirement to classify planets, and it was based on since-disproven reasoning.

He said moons such as Saturn’s Titan and Jupiter’s Europa have been routinely called planets by planetary scientists since the time of Galileo.

“The IAU definition would say that the fundamental object of planetary science, the planet, is supposed to be a defined on the basis of a concept that nobody uses in their research,” Metzger said. “And it would leave out the second-most complex, interesting planet in our solar system.” “We now have a list of well over 100 recent examples of planetary scientists using the word planet in a way that violates the IAU definition, but they are doing it because it’s functionally useful,” he said. “It’s a sloppy definition,” Metzger said of the IAU’s definition. “They didn’t say what they meant by clearing their orbit. If you take that literally, then there are no planets, because no planet clears its orbit.”

The planetary scientist said that the literature review showed that the real division between planets and other celestial bodies, such as asteroids, occurred in the early 1950s when Gerard Kuiper published a paper that made the distinction based on how they were formed.

However, even this reason is no longer considered a factor that determines if a celestial body is a planet, Metzger said.

Study co-author Kirby Runyon, with Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, Maryland, said the IAU’s definition was erroneous since the literature review showed that clearing orbit is not a standard that is used for distinguishing asteroids from planets, as the IAU claimed when crafting the 2006 definition of planets.

“We showed that this is a false historical claim,” Runyon said. “It is therefore fallacious to apply the same reasoning to Pluto,” he said. Metzger said that the definition of a planet should be based on its intrinsic properties, rather than ones that can change, such as the dynamics of a planet’s orbit. “Dynamics are not constant, they are constantly changing,” Metzger said. “So, they are not the fundamental description of a body, they are just the occupation of a body at a current era.”

Instead, Metzger recommends classifying a planet based on if it is large enough that its gravity allows it to become spherical in shape.

“And that’s not just an arbitrary definition, Metzger said. “It turns out this is an important milestone in the evolution of a planetary body, because apparently when it happens, it initiates active geology in the body.”

Pluto, for instance, has an underground ocean, a multilayer atmosphere, organic compounds, evidence of ancient lakes and multiple moons, he said.

“It’s more dynamic and alive than Mars,” Metzger said. “The only planet that has more complex geology is the Earth.”

10 Unique Animals You Won’t Believe Exist

10 strange and amazing animals that you have probably never heard of. Nature is truly full of surprises!
We live in the twenty-first century, and all continents have already been discovered, all secrets of our planet revealed, all mountain peaks conquered. Just when you think you have seen it all, some new bizarre creature makes an appearance instantly restoring your faith in the impossible!

TIMESTAMPS
Mangalitsa Pig, a.k.a. “a pig in sheep’s clothing” 0:50
Rhinopithecus or golden snub-nosed monkey 1:33
Emperor tamarin 2:13
Patagonian Mara 3:04
Fluffy cow 3:52
Markhor Goat 4:44
Raccoon dog 5:23
Blue Footed Booby 6:25
Malayan Colugo 7:13
Venezuelan Poodle Moth 8:09

SUMMARY
– The birthplace of this curly-haired pig is Hungary where it was discovered in the mid-19th century. Due to the fleece covering this animal, it resembles a sheep, therefore, such a name!
– The name of this species is roxellana, and there is a story behind it. It is believed that they were called this way after the supposedly snub-nosed courtesan of Suleiman the Magnificent (a 16th century Sultan of the Ottoman Empire).
– They were called like this because of the resemblance of their mustache to that of German Emperor Wilhelm II.
– Patagonia Mara is the fourth largest rodent on our planet. There are several interesting facts about them. Females often put offsprings into creches for safety.
– Fluffy cows are looked after by people whose work is to wash, dry and use products to style these animals, so they look as fluffy as they do! It is necessary to maintain them daily, and it will take months of regular grooming until they get this lovely look of kids toys.
– If you see a creature which looks as if it’s trying to catch an alien radio signal from space, it’s most likely Markhor Goat. They can grow as long as 6 ft from head to tail!
– If you can’t decide if you want to have a dog or a raccoon as a pet, we have just the thing for you – raccoon dog! Despite having raccoon-like markings on their fur, they are not very closely related to the North American raccoon.
– Blue Footed Booby are to catch your eye if you ever visit the Galapagos Islands. They can look a bit clumsy and comical on land, but they are excellent at flying and swimming.
– Colugo has a large gliding membrane (like a flying squirrel), and they can glide for long distances between trees standing far apart.
– Even if the Poodle Moth may look as if it lives in Antarctica with all this fur, in fact, it comes from Venezuela, a tropical country. Its hairs don’t serve for heating.

BONUS
Cloud Antelope! This species lives in the clouds (that’s why such a name)! Its bright blue fur is the reflection of cloudless blue skies in the area of its habitat. Its diet consists of sun rays and candies…

Endangered Species (HS03) Conservation Biology University Malaysia Sabah 2017/2018

*Living wild species are like a library of books still unread. Our heedless destruction of them is akin to burning that library without ever having read its books*

The population of these animals have been decreasing over the years and some are said to have become extinct.

We are from HS03 (Conservation Biology) Programme University Malaysia Sabah. Sabah..a rainforest country where all types of animals are able to live together peacefully – or that was what used to happen many years ago. Now, some of these animals are under serious threat and are facing the possibility of becoming extinct.

Habitat loss, poaching for parts which is used in traditional medicine as well as pet trade are among the common key threats that led to a high percentage decline of wildlife population in the last three decades. Among the most endangered animals living in the Sabah forests are the *Orangutan, Proboscis Monkeys, Pygmy Elephants, Bornean Rhinoceros, Malayan Tiger, Binturong* and *Sun Bear.*

Tanzania – Lake Eyasi: Hadza tribe hunters & gatherers

The Hadza tribe lives around Lake Eyasi in Tanzania. Some 350 live as hunter-gatherers, forming one of the last hunter-gatherer tribes in Africa. As descendants of Tanzania’s aboriginal hunter-gatherer population, they occupied their current territory for several thousand years, with little modification to their basic way of life. They are nomads who don’t even build huts as a home, but sleep under the bushes with a fire burning at night to stay warm.

The video clip shows their living environment and the hunt by male of the tribe.

Republicans Want Endangered Red Wolves Extinct

Red Wolves are critically endangered, and live in only one place in America. A local group wants the wolves officially extinct, and now that the powers that be are people who don’t prioritize conservation. Kim and Emma break it down!

“The red wolf, Canis rufus, currently exists only as a small population in one part of North Carolina. It’s listed under the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as critically endangered, which means it’s one step away from being extinct in the wild.

That’s why it strikes us as odd that, hidden in a Senate report related to funding for the Department of the Interior, is an order to end the red wolf recovery program that’s currently being run by the federal government.”*

A Beloved Muppet Song Came From a Soft Core Film

Mahna Mahna (do do do do do) is one of The Muppets best loved songs. Aaaaaand it came from a softcore Scandinavian movie from the 60s. Kim and Brett break it down.

“Jim Henson’s immortal creations have lent their distinctive voices to plenty of great songs—“Bein’ Green,” written by Henson standby Joe Raposo, or Paul Williams’ “Rainbow Connection”—but none quite have the nagging persistence of “Mahna Mahna,” which helps bring The Muppets to a rousing finish.”*

Can We Still Save Net Neutrality?

Ajit Pai has announced the end of Net Neutrality– he and other Republican representatives are going to kill it, despite the American public, that overwhelmingly wants it. But it might not be a hopeless cause just yet. Kim and Emma break it down!

“There’s no two ways around it: things look very, very bad for net neutrality. But Greer said she and other open internet advocates aren’t giving up.

“We are certainly up against long odds, and this FCC leadership is barely trying to hide the fact that they are working in the interest of Comcast and Verizon and not the public, but that is not new,” Greer says. “The internet has changed the rules for what is and isn’t possible in Washington, DC and it’s precisely that transformative power that we are trying to defend.”*

15 Incredibly Rare Animals

Top 15 rarest animals on earth that need help, these beautiful creatures like the rare strawberry tiger are all close to extinction!

Subscribe to Talltanic http://goo.gl/wgfvrr

Sumatran Rhino
7. The Sumatran Rhino is a dangerously endangered animal. Rhinos as a species are suffering around the world and most species have only a few left. There are fewer than 100 of these graceful animals left in the world and saving the rhinos has become a huge conservation effort worldwide. People hope to be able to save at least one species of rhino and perhaps that species will be the Sumatran rhino.

Giant Squid
6. The giant squid is a mystery of the sea. This animal may or may not be endangered. This animal was first caught on camera in 2006, and until then there was a possibility that they were just a myth. However, evidence had suggested that they were a real thing. For years, humanity had been finding blue whales, the world’s largest animal, washed up on the shores of Earth with giant beak marks and suction cup marks. This led to the question, what else is big enough to attack and possibly kill a blue whale? The answer is simple; giant squids are out there. There have only been a few confirmed sightings of these large animals, and in the image, you see a depiction of one attacking a blue whale. There is a possibility that the reason these animals were sighted more frequently before the industrial age and the development of the camera is that they have been heavily affected by human ocean pollution. There is not enough information and sightings to confirm that these animals are endangered, but they likely are.

Okapi
5. An okapi is a close relative of the giraffe. It may look like a zebra or a deer, but this is not the case. They are endemic to the Democratic Republic of the Congo. They inhabit forests and primarily have a diet of leaves. They are classified as an endangered species and deforestation is the primary cause. The okapi is being forced out of their homes in the forest, and they are dying out because they cannot survive without an abundance of foliage on which to feast. There are active conservation efforts to protect these animals, but their population is still in decline and us as a people have to be more active in their preservation.

Strawberry Tigers
4. The strawberry tiger or golden tiger is a very rare type of tiger how it is not a different species from the average tiger. It, like a white tiger, is a genetic variation of the average tiger. Its beautiful coloration and majestic appearance make it one of the most beautiful species of the world. However, tigers as a species are critically endangered due to the increase in deforestation in their natural habitats. As the habitats of these beautiful animals recede the species will recede and fewer tigers, strawberry or not, are roaming the planet.

Blue Lobster
3. The blue lobster is a direct result of a genetic mutation in the species of lobster known as the American Lobster. This animal, specifically the blue variety, is incredibly rare. It is not technically endangered, but the total population is very low because blue lobsters are an anomaly of genetics. The blue is caused by an excess of internal protein and sightings of these have become more common in the past few years. They are beautiful animals that deserve our protection.

Yangtze River Dolphins
2. The Yangtze River Dolphin or Baiji is one of the most endangered species in the world. It shares the same problem as the Red River Softshell Turtle, and it is dying out due to Chinese industrialization. These animals used to thrive in the Yangtze river, but now rising pollution in the river has brought them to the brink of nonexistence. The total population is now somewhere between 0 and 13, and they may already be extinct. There has not been a fully confirmed sighting of these dolphins in the wild since the mid-2000s. However, there are ongoing conservation efforts based around a few of these dolphins that exist in captivity.

Chinese Giant Salamander
1. The giant Chinese salamander is a gentle giant that is on the verge of extinction. These animals are one of the longest-lived species on the planet with an average lifespan of almost 200 years; some live even longer. The salamander as a species is ancient and has been around in the form we see it in today since animals first crawled out of the ocean. Sadly, these ancient creatures are being driven to extinction by people, primarily due to overeating and consumption. These giant salamanders are considered a delicacy in some parts of China and people partake in the unethical consumption of these beautiful creatures regularly.

Endangered porpoise dies during rescue

The Mexican vaquita porpoise is about to become extinct, with fewer than 30 left in the wild. So a rescue mission to find the last vaquitas is taking place. A female porpoise was successfully captured, but died a few hours later, putting the mission in jeopardy.

Sea Shepherd Crew Save Humpback Whale Entangled in Illegal Gillnet

Sea Shepherd crew rescued a whale entangled in an illegal totoaba gillnet in the Gulf of California.
Sea Shepherd currently has two vessels in Mexico’s Gulf of California on OPERATION MILAGRO.
Our goal is to save the vaquita porpoises, the most endangered marine mammal.
The vaquita are caught as a result of fishing the totoaba, a fish poached for its swim bladder.
Both the vaquita and the totoaba are endangered species and protected by law.
Both species live only in the Gulf of California.

16 Rarest Animals Images

From the the world’s most endangered and rarest animals here are 16 Rarest Animals Images. Have you been fortunate enough to have spotted a rare animal?

Tell us about it in the comments below. Subscribe to our channel for more amazing videos just like this, thanks for watching!

7 – A fleeting glance…
It was good enough though for a group of biologists, who were over the moon to have spotted a bout 15-20 Tonkin Snub-Nosed monkeys where they were working near the Chinese Frontier. These monkeys were thought to be extinct, but now it’s estimated that there are 200 remaining. You find them in parts of Vietnam and close to the Chinese border.

6 – It Bites!
It would be a good and a bad thing to catch a Cuban Solenodon. Good because they were labelled extinct, but they have since been rediscovered. Bad because if you get bitten by one, you will be in a lot of pain, because their bite is pretty poisonous. In 1970 it was labelled extinct, but 2 were caught in 1974 and 1975 respectively. One was captured again in 2003, studied and released back into the wild.

5 – – Made in China…
Meet the Ili Pika, one of the rarest and most endangered species on earth! Weidong Li discovered this exceptionally cute animal in 1983, and then strangely enough – 20 years later, it was none other than Weidong Li who spotted them again. He found this one in the Tian Shan Mountains, and they are fondly known as the Magic Rabbit, because they are so elusive. There are only about 1000 of them left in the world today.

4 – Not for sale…
So the Worcester’s Buttonquail was believed to be extinct for a very long time, until one day all that changed. The story is a bit unclear, but it turned up at a market in Luzon in 2009 and was sold as food. Some reports say the quail wondered into the market, whilst others say the bird was caught in the mountains. Researchers are thrilled that they are no longer extinct, but are saddened by the fact that this rare bird was sent to the cooking pot!

3 – The lengths a mother will go…
Louise Firouz was an American woman who ran an equestrian centre in Iran for children. This was in 1965, and she was determined to find a small pony for the kids to ride and practice on. She heard that she could find them near the Caspian sea, so she went ahead to search for them. She didn’t the ponies she was originally after – but what she found was way better! She rediscovered the Caspian Horse. It was thought to be extinct for a thousand years, and it was Louise who started a breeding program to ensure these horses would survive.

2 – I came, I saw, I captured…
This beautiful white very rare harbor porpoise was spotted in 2015 in Denmark. In the last 100 years, this animal has only been documents 15 times.

1 – On the Red List…
AS a whole, the Australian Tiger Quolls are not considered extinct – although they are on the Red list for being very close to threated status. However, there are certain species that are endangered, so when one wanders into your backyard, it’s definitely very exciting!
