The leading kitty in the new live-action “Cats” film is played by a black woman — but you wouldn’t know it by looking at her fur. The film’s trailer dropped Thursday and received a horrified reaction from viewers, who complained that the human-cat hybrid CGI is nightmarish — and outraged tweeters are claiming it “white-washes” star Francesca Hayward’s face. Hayward, 27, is a relative unknown among a star-studded cast including Jennifer Hudson, Taylor Swift, Idris Elba, Jason Derulo and Judi Dench. A former principal ballerina for the British Royal Ballet with no previous silver-screen credits, Hayward was born in Nairobi, Kenya, before moving to England at age 2. “So how come you can clearly see this is taylor swift/the entire bottom half of her face is visible, but you wouldn’t know the black lead was black unless you knew her already,” tweeted one critic. “she’s BLACK?!” responded another user. Hayward’s character, Victoria, is a white kitten in the original Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, but many are complaining that this is arbitrary and could have easily been changed. In the ballet world, people are also incensed for a different reason: Hayward is being billed as a newcomer. “Every #ballet fan watching the #CatsMovie trailer: What do you mean, ‘introducing’ Francesca Hayward?” tweeted Carly Chalmers. In addition to being a renowned ballerina, Hayward collaborated with active wear brand Lululemon on a limited-edition collection last year. “Cats” is coming to theaters Dec. 20. Francesca Hayward on dancing the role of Manon for the first time (The Royal Ballet)
Royal Ballet Soloist Francesca Hayward talks about being partnered by Edward Watson and the challenges of becoming Manon.

Kenneth MacMillan began work on Manon shortly after the birth of his only daughter. His source was the 18th-century French novel by Abbe Prevost, already adapted twice for opera by Massenet and Puccini. Renowned dance musician Leighton Lucas and his assistant Hilda Gaunt provided a score made from a patchwork of works by Massenet, including his famous yearning Elegie as the theme for the lovers. The premiere was given on 7 March 1974, the lead roles of Manon and Des Grieux danced by Antoinette Sibley and Anthony Dowell. The ballet quickly became a staple of The Royal Ballet’s repertory.
MacMillan found new sympathy with the capricious Manon, bringing his customary psychological insight and the memories of his own impoverished upbringing. He described his heroine as ‘not so much afraid of being poor as ashamed of being poor’. Designs by MacMillan’s friend Nicholas Georgiadis reflect this, depicting a world of lavish splendour polluted by miserable poverty. MacMillan’s spectacular ensemble scenes for the whole Company create vivid, complex portraits of the distinct societies of Paris and New Orleans. But it is Manon and Des Grieux’s impassioned pas de deux – recalling the intensity of MacMillan’s earlier work, Romeo and Juliet – that drive this tragic story, and make Manon one of MacMillan’s most heartbreaking dramas.
