Shirtless, bowl-smoking bandit steals kitten from Portland pet shelter

A shirtless bandit strolled into a pet adoption center in Northeast Portland and swiped a black kitten from a cage, surveillance video shows.

The brazen, after-hours theft Sunday from The Pixie Project has left staff worried sick about the well-being of little Swan, who is barely 3 months old.

“We all kind of have a maternal instinct here,” said Kate Northington, who has worked at the Northeast Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard shelter for two years.

“There’s a gut-wrenching fear that comes with seeing someone take one of your babies.”

The cat-napper walked through the shelter’s unlocked front door around 6:25 p.m. as a few volunteers and employees worked in other rooms in the building, Northington said.

Video shows the man, who is wearing a baseball cap and backpack, wander about the front entrance.

At one point, he stops and appears to smoke from a small pipe clutched in his hand.

“At first I thought it was a walkie-talkie,” Northington said, after viewing the video. “One of our kennel techs said he was definitely smoking something.

The man arrives in front of a green animal cage behind the front counter, the video shows. Soon after, he can be seen walking off with the kitten cradled in his hands.

Anyone with information is asked to contact The Pixie Project or Portland Police Bureau.
