“If we go out to hunt at midnight, then we see strange creatures,” says one of the hunters. “The strange animals come out only at midnight.

The hunt starts with a series of ancient traditions, including chanting, spraying alcohol, and giving an offering to appease the gods, as well as putting charms on your person and your weapons.

Unlike foreign hunters, who often come to Africa to hunt big game such as elephants, rhino, giraffe, and buffalo, much of the “big five” animals – most of which has already been hunted to extinction in West Africa – local African hunters now focus on small game. And they don’t hunt for trophies, but for food and sport.

The hunt begins at the Coker Area Hunters Association in Ogun state, Nigeria – “They are going to kill a lion or elephant,” jokes BattaBox presenter Bolly as he eats his breakfast. “So you must eat first, in case they chase you!”

The wild animals that hunters commonly kill in Nigeria include antelope, grass cutter, gazelle, duikers, rabbits and snakes. The hunters take their machetes and rifles and go into the deep bush in the countryside of Nigeria where the hunters give the offering of a male cockerel, kola nuts, and alcohol to the gods with the chant:

“Push the animals our way today, so we may kill bush meat. So shall it be,” says the hunter with the gun slung over his shoulder.

Dogs are also an essential companion for any hunter, and before they enter the bush, special charms are put in the dog’s eyes so it may see and smell the wild animals better in the deep bush. The guns include all variety of rifles and shotguns. And when in the bush, the hunters call to each other with cries and shouts, while hacking at the bush with machetes to drive the animals towards the hunters.

And today’s hunt is successful – as a dog (called James) kills a duiker which is put into a bag; and then a large Grass Cutter crosses the path of one hunter and is shot immediately; and in total four animals, including antelope and rabbit, are killed by the hunters.

And after the hunt, the hunters skin the animals, light a fire, and then roast the meat to eat and replenish their energy. A small prayer of thanks is offered to Ogun, and the hunters return to their homes.

How to find the Best Nigerian Street Snacks

Nigerian snacks are some of the tastiest in the world, so BattaBox reveals how to find the best Nigerian Street snacks, or Small Chops as we love to call them!

► Subscribe to BattaBox on YouTube: http://goo.gl/4dgy2r

Firstly, the best can be found on the streets of Lagos, Nigeria! So BattaBox Presenter Fluorin YP hits the streets of Lagos to find out where to find and how to cook the best Nigerian snacks.

“Nigerian snacks are so important in this life,” says Fluorin YP. “So today, I will be finding all the best Nigerian snacks and small chops, if you are a foodie and cannot fast for 20 seconds then you are in the spirit with me!”

The best Nigerian street snacks that BattaBox buys in our Lagos video include grilled chicken with tomato and hot pepper paste for N500; egg roll and meat pie for N100 from a street seller cart; groundnuts for N50; Popcorn and groundnuts for N100 best bought from a Lagos street hawker in a nylon bag; fried potato or yam for N10 each; fried plantain; and many more Nigerian snacks.

The variety comes from the different foods and crops we have in the country, that can be used for fresh and cheap ingredients. And prices of the small chops on streets of Lagos, although it’s gone up recently with inflation, average at about N100.

“Akara, Puff Puff, Moi Moi, Egg Roll, Buns, Fish Roll,” says one hungry Nigerian businessman. “They are my favorite and definitely the best Nigerian snacks.”

“Samosa, plantain, potato, Akara, fish and turkey,” says one Lagos trader. “They are my favorite Nigerian snacks.”

The main method of cooking any snack is with a charcoal grill on the roadside, or deep-fried in large burnt pan with plenty of palm oil. And Nigeria may be a hot country, but we like our food also served hot and fresh.

And all Nigerian street snacks are best washed down with Fura de Nunu for N100, which is a white liquid mixture of millet and milk, so it becomes fermented with a thick consistency.

So what are your favorite Nigerian snacks? Gist us in the comments below!

Inside the Prison of Obafemi Awolowo

Nigeria’s Chief Obafemi Awolowo was one of the great Independence leaders of Nigeria – and BattaBox are given an exclusive tour of the prison where was sent after being accused of treason.

The prison, where Awolowo was kept for a few monthsin 1963 in Lekki, on the outskirts of the city of Lagos, Nigeria is in the same condition as when he would have been held prisoner. The Lagos state has renovated parts of the building and made it into a museum, but the prison room, the bathroom, his bed, clothes and even his famous spectacles are on display. Our BattaBox presenter is given the tour of the prison where Obafemi Awolowo stayed, where it now has photos of his political colleagues, newspaper clippings and headlines from when he was sentenced to treason, and also a new bust to celebrate and remember Awolowo.

In 1963 Chief Obafemi Awolow was found guilty of conspiring to overthrow the government of Nigeria and sentenced to 10 years imprisonment. A coup d’etat in 1966 led to his release in July.

The prison was originally, over 300 years ago, a slave trade port owned by a Portuguese slave trader named Lecqi. The remains of structures of the slave trade still remain at the compound – including the Point of No Return and the underground prison where slaves were kept before they were sold abroad. The grave of Mr Lecqi also still survives, where he died from malaria and was buried upright.

Chief Obafemi Jeremiah Oyeniyi Awolowo was a nationalist who moved to a position of prominence in the struggle for Independence. In 1945, he wrote his first book entitled “Path to Nigerian Freedom”. After Nigeria gained independence in 1960, Obafemi Awolowo ran for the Presidency three times, but never victorious, nevertheless remained a major opposition figure.

Some of Awolowo’s most notable acheivements include granting free primary education, free healthcare, he built the first skyscraper in Ibadan – Coco House (which still remains the tallest building in the city!), and also established WNTV (West Nigeria Television), the first television station in Africa.

“I love Obafemi Awolowo because he gave us free education,” explains one Nigerian lady. “And free health.”

“I enjoyed free education because of Awolowo. If other leaders had done what he did, the Nigeria would be a better place,” explains a Nigerian trader.

Awolowo died at his home in Ikenne, Ogun state in 1987, aged 78.

What are your thoughts on Obafemi Awolowo and his role in Nigerian history? Do you think he was a good leader?
