In Europe, there is high demand for the seeds contained in these cones, as it is believed that these seeds grow the perfect Christmas trees. But there is also a dark side to this Christmas story. Even the highest paid laborers only make 90 cents per pound of seed, while the lowest make 16 cents per pound. In addition, “cone pirates” poach these valuable cones away from the company laborers. Some climbers risk ascending with no safety equipment and can fall and be seriously injured—or even killed. It’s a complex, and dangerous, process that allows people around the world to enjoy their holidays.
